Spring is in the air. In the South, that means its time for BBQs and low country boils. You’ll need something sweet to counter all that spicy goodness. Today I’m sharing one my family’s favorite warm weather desserts, my Southern Style banana pudding recipe!
Ingredients
- Box of Vanilla wafers
- 2-3 bananas
- Family size vanilla pudding mix
- Tub of cool whip
- Can of sweetened condensed milk
- 3 Cups of milk
Making The Vanilla Pudding
This portion of the recipe will vary depending on the type of vanilla pudding mix you buy. In general, all you have to do is mix milk with the vanilla pudding mix. Follow the instructions on the package.
Once the pudding is made according to the package instructions, mix half a can of sweetened condensed milk and half the tub of cool whip into the pudding. The sweetened condensed milk is key, as its going to make the pudding much more rich.
Once everything is mixed together, set the pudding aside. If you can, put it into the fridge and let it sit for a couple of hours so the flavors can marry together. This will help enhance the flavor of the southern style banana pudding.
Assembling The Southern Style Banana Pudding
Before assembling, cut 2 to 3 bananas into slices. The quantity is up to your taste, as is the thickness of the cut. I prefer mine thinner, and aim for around the same thickness as the vanilla wafers.

Once the bananas are cut, we can begin to assemble the banana pudding! You’ll need a baking dish, or your favorite deep serving dish.
Start by putting a layer of vanilla wafers on the bottom of the dish. Next, add a layer of sliced bananas. With a spatula, slather on some of that delicious vanilla pudding you mixed earlier, but don’t go too crazy, we are going to be doing multiple layers.
With the pudding evenly spread, toss on another layer of vanilla wafers, completely covering the pudding. Follow up with another layer of bananas. As you probably guessed, another layer of pudding goes on next.
Continue repeating layers until you are out of ingredients or your dish is filled to the top. To finish the dish, take the remaining cool whip from earlier and layer it on top of the banana pudding. And with that, the dish is done!
