Simple Stuffed Chicken Recipe

When a dish is stuffed or smothered it just sounds indulgent doesn’t it? Whether it’s stuffed shells or smothered pork chops, these words just get your mouth watering. Today, I’m going to share with you my simple stuffed chicken recipe, the latest in my series of quick and simple dinner ideas.

What do you put in a stuffed chicken breast? This recipe has a touch of Thanksgiving as it features stuffing, gravy, and some roasted chicken in place of turkey. It’s an easy stuffed chicken recipe that is sure to please your family. If you are longing for a taste of the holidays, this dish is just what the chef ordered.

Ingredients

  • chicken breasts (1 per serving)
  • 1 box of stuffing
  • package of chicken gravy
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • salt
  • pepper
  • toothpicks

Prepping the Simple Stuffed Chicken Recipe

The first thing we need to do is prepare our stuffing. We are going simple, so just follow the instructions on the box, and once it is prepared set the stuffing aside. Once it is prepared we can set it aside for now.

Next, we need to prepare our chicken breast. We need to butterfly the breast, cutting it down the middle longways, but not all the way through. When opened, the breast should look like a heart!

Once the chicken is cut, we can begin stuffing. Scoop the stuffing into the chicken breast, but don’t overload it. While we aren’t going to completely seal the chicken back up, we don’t want it so full that we can’t close it at all.

After you’ve put an adequate amount of stuffing in the breast, fold it back together. I use toothpicks to hold my breast together, but if you have kitchen twine that works as well. Once you’ve secured the chicken, generously season both sides with salt, pepper, garlic, and onion powder.

Cooking

Now it’s time to cook the chicken. Most of the cooking will be done in the oven, but I like to give my chicken a good sear before roasting. Warm-up a skillet over medium-high heat. Once the pan has warmed up, add the butter. When the butter has melted, throw in the chicken and cook until you get a nice golden sear on each side.

With the chicken seared, it’s time to roast! We are going to cook the chicken at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. Depending on the thickness of your chicken, and how long you had it in the pan, it could need a few more minutes. Check the temp with a thermometer to be sure.

How to Calibrate Your Thermometer

While the chicken is roasting we can get the chicken gravy going. Simply follow the instruction on the package, which is usually going to require a cup or two of water. Once the gravy is done set it aside until the chicken is ready.

Serving

Once the chicken is done, remove the toothpicks and transfer them to a plate. Spoon over your preferred amount of gravy on top and you are done!

I love serving green beans with this dish. If you want to expand the Thanksgiving atmosphere you could add some cranberry sauce. The sweetness of the sauce contrasts well with the savory goodness of the stuffing and gravy.

This simple stuffed chicken recipe is great for a quick and simple dinner idea. It can be jazzed up with more seasonings, homemade stuffing, and even homemade chicken gravy. There are no limits to the variations that can be applied.
