How To Make Hot Chocolate

Old Man Winter is here in full force, and the weather outside is frightful! There’s nothing like a nice hot drink to stave him off. Today I’ll teach you how to make hot chocolate!

Ingredients:

  • semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • milk
  • cocoa powder
  • vanilla extract
  • whipped cream
  • marshmellows
  • cinnamon stick (optional)
  • candy cane (optional)
  • nutmeg (optional)

How To Make Hot Chocolate

Hot chocolate is very simple to make. Start by melting your semi-sweet chocolate chips. Do this on a medium-low heat so the chocolate does not scorch on the bottom of the pan. Use a spatula to stir the bottom and side of the pan to keep it from sticking as well.

Once the chocolate is melted, begin to slowly stir in some milk. I’m not giving portions here because it will all depend on how many servings you are looking to make. This is definitely a recipe you will have to eyeball. Furthermore, the thickness of the drink is entirely up to you. I like my hot chocolate thick, but if you want a thinner batch, simply add more milk.

When the hot chocolate has reached the thickness of your desire, add a tablespoon of cocoa powder. This will add depth to the chocolaty flavor. Next, a splash of vanilla extract is added. Mix well and taste to make sure everything is to your liking. If the drink is not sweet enough, add a teaspoon of sugar.

The above recipe will give you a classic hot chocolate taste. However, we can spice up this base recipe with the optional seasonings I listed above. Add in a sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg for a spicy holiday mix. Now let’s look at how to make hot chocolate in different ways.

Hot Chocolate Alternatives

I am a certified chocoholic, but there are terrific alternatives if chocolate is not your thing. White chocolate offers a distinct flavor profile that differs from traditional chocolate. Change out the semi-sweet chocolate chips for white chocolate chips and ditch the cocoa; the rest of the process outlined above remains the same.

You can also simply add to the original chocolate recipe. Peanut butter pairs excellently with chocolate and will transform the drink into a completely new flavor. Nutella is another flavor enhancer you can experiment with.

Hot Chocolate Garnishes

With the actual hot chocolate made, it’s time to garnish! You can’t go wrong with marshmallows. A classic never gets old. Whipped cream is another traditional topping that is very popular.

For a spicy kick, a cinnamon stick will add seasoning and a touch of fanciness. Grated nutmeg on top of some whipped cream is another spicy addition that will pair well with the cinnamon. For a minty kick, a candy cane is a festive garnish with some nice flair. Alternatively, you could add some crushed-up peppermint on top of whipped cream.

Hot Chocolate Garnish

If you want to stick with traditional hot chocolate flavors, you could add some chocolate sprinkles on top of whipped cream or marshmallows. Grated chocolate will also work. Chocolate or caramel syrup are fantastic toppings as well.
